16th International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Exhibition ~FC EXPO 2020~

Summary

Yachiyo is participating in the 16th [International] Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Exhibition FC EXPO 2020, an international business exhibition that brings together all the technologies, parts and materials, equipment, and fuel cell systems necessary for research and development and manufacturing of hydrogen and fuel cells. We will be displaying hydrogen tanks (developed products) for fuel cell vehicles, etc., at Tokyo Big Sight from February 26 to February 28. This time, we have newly developed a dry specification hydrogen tank that uses Tow-prepreg* in addition to CFRP material as an elemental technology for mass production. In addition to hydrogen tanks with wet specifications for small lots, we will exhibit developed products and layered design image videos, and propose a variety of technological developments tailored to customer needs.
*Tow-prepreg: A bundle of carbon fibers impregnated with thermosetting plastic.

Exhibited Items
Hydrogen Tank for Fuel Cell Vehicles

Type 4 Tank 70MPa Dry Specification (development product)
A manufacturing method that performs filament winding (FW) using reinforcing fiber bundles that are pre-impregnated with matrix plastic.
-High quality stability as there is little variation in the plastic ratio in FRP.
- It is suitable for mass production because it can follow high-speed filament winding (fiber winding).
- High quality stability as there is little variation in the plastic ratio in FRP.
Type 4 Tank 70MPa Wet Specification (development product)
A manufacturing method that performs FW while impregnating reinforcing fibers with matrix plastic.
- The amount of matrix plastic that can be mixed during production is adjustable for each lot, making it suitable for small-lot production.
- Cheaper than dry specification
Type 4 Tank for Natural Gas Vehicles 20MPa (certified product)

We developed tanks for natural gas vehicles as a step toward hydrogen tanks for fuel cell vehicles, and have accumulated know-how on plastic liners and FRP winding technology.
Passed container inspection according to Attachment 9, illustrative standards based on container safety regulations in Japan
Type 4 Tank for Hydrogen Station 82MPa (reference exhibit)

With the aim of reducing the cost of pressure accumulators for hydrogen stations, we have been conducting joint research with NEDO on the research and development of compatibility confirmation using Type 4 containers. This project ended in fiscal 2017, and we were able to gain a lot of knowledge regarding station pressure accumulators.
